THE MALECON (1) This is the famous seafront of Havana where locals stroll, gossip and relax after work. SUGARTOWN This is a theatre in the town of Banes. The roof had collapsed long ago leaving the only working area in the foyer where an afternoon exercise class was being held for local women. CHE’S MANOR This is a quiet and leafy suburb of Havana, home to government officials and the military. Che Guevara’s family home, now a museum is in this district. FusteRlandIA This is a suburb of Havana. In defiance of Russian austerity a local artist decided to decorate his house and garden in the style of Gaudi. When he completed his home he continued to decorate most of the local houses and streets with whimsical creatures and scenes from Cuban and South American history. THEY WILL RETURN This painting depicts the day that five political prisoners were returned to Cuba as part of the brief thawing of US/Cuban relations. The man looking out to sea is a security guard of the once infamous Hotel Nacional. "They Will Return" is a reference to a quote by Fidel Castro. HAVANA SKYLINE This features the imposing building called La Focsa completed with American backing just a few years before the revolution. AFTER THE RAIN This is a typical backstreet in Havana as recorded from the front seat of a taxi on the way back from a Jazz festival. STILL STANDING This imposing looking building was a few streets away from the seafront. The balconies have collapsed on three floors but it was very much inhabited at the time. The building features briefly in the recent film, 7 Days in Havana.
